In 2026 and 2027, I have the great pleasure of participating in a magnificent performing arts group, called MurMur for adults with special needs. Together, we are developing a production for the Kuopio City Theatre, set to premiere in 2027. I will be working as a sound artist, performer, and facilitator in this project.
The Kuopio City Theatre launched this performing arts group in the autumn of 2025. This initiative had long been hoped for, and now that wish is becoming a reality. The project meets the target group’s desire to create high-quality art under professional guidance and within a professional theatre setting. The group is meeting again this year at the Maria Stage to develop a new production for 2027. The group previously worked together between 2016 and 2019 as part of the cultural programming offered to individuals with special needs by the Regional Dance Centre of Eastern Finland and the City of Kuopio.
At the heart of the artists’ work lie shared authorship, an embrace of the unfinished, and an openness to the undefined. The aim is to question prevailing power dynamics and to work according to the principles of friendship. Furthermore, the goal is to dream, to establish new practices, and to create a world where the artistic identity of every group member can flourish.
The group was founded by Kaisa Ritola and dance artist Anna-Maria Väisänen, who also facilitate and lead the project. I am participating in the project as a director and co-artist for the 2026–27 period. We aim to provide artists requiring special support with the opportunity for long-term artistic work, to develop the group’s internal practices, and to come together as artists in a spirit of radical kindness. My role within the group focuses on working with members—specifically those interested in sound and sound production—who are collaborating on a new piece. Together, we are creating a unique soundscape and the instruments to accompany it.
The project is funded by the Kuopio City Theatre, the City of Kuopio, and the Finnish Cultural Foundation (North Savo Regional Fund); in addition to my own work, funding for 2026–27 is provided by the Arts and Culture Agency.
